Prevention Program

We are excited to be introducing to you a new standard of preventive care that we are providing to all of our valued patients. We are committed to integrating evolving scientific understandings with the best new available technology and treatment options.
Our teeth are challenged in 3 major ways: decay, periodontal disease and occlusion.

DECAY:
Tooth decay is caused by certain types of bacteria that live in your mouth. The result is destruction of tooth structure resulting in fillings, crowns, root canals and even possible loss of the tooth. On each patient, we will be performing a caries risk assessment that will be based upon disease indicators (such as visible cavities, x-ray lesions, dental history) and risk factors (such as diet, hygiene). We may perform a caries bacterial test and/or saliva test. Based on your risk assessment, recommendations will be made that will help you attain a low risk for future dental decay.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE:
Gum disease is also caused by certain types of bacteria that live in your mouth. The result is destruction of the supporting structures of the tooth (gum recession, inflamed, bleeding gums, destruction of the bone that surrounds the tooth) which can result in root canals, abscesses and loss of the tooth. The latest research is showing a link between periodontal disease and heart disease. On each patient, we will be performing a periodontal risk assessment that will be based upon disease indicators (such as bleeding gums, periodontal pockets, and x-ray pathology) and risk factors (such as smoking, diabetes and oral home care). We may perform a periodontal bacterial test and/or a test that will indicate a genetic predisposition to periodontal disease. Based on your risk assessment, recommendations will be made that will help you attain healthy gums.

OCCLUSION:
Occlusal disease is caused by a misaligned bite that you may not even be aware of, Early signs become visible as mild wear and chipping. More advanced signs include generalized wear, abfractions (a V shaped notch in the tooth by the gum line), bone loss, broken teeth and broken restorations resulting in crowns and root canal treatments. It can also cause problems with the gums, the temperomandibular joint and the jaw muscles. The newest technology, called T-Scan, utilizes a special sensor attached to a computer that will generate a computerized analysis of the patient's bite that precisely pinpoints any problems. Based on your risk assessment and if necessary a Tekscan analysis, recommendations will be made that will help you achieve a healthy occlusion.
